As I mull over the future of this blog and its relationship to the various other social media I participate in, I am compelled to make a comment on the premise of Twitter “following”.
You see, I strongly suspect Twitter was devised as a method for individuals to communicate. However, it is rapidly becoming a method for entities to communicate also. Typically web sites, web services and even traditional businesses. Now this is not a bad thing. It means I can follow Vodafone, Telecom or TUAW through the Twitter interface and likely gain some value.
What gets me going, however, is who follows me. I’ve had recent follows from UStreamTV and climateactions and I’m left with the question “Why?”
I know I don’t have to follow these entities and I know all my tweets are public, but it still feels strange that these entities choose to follow me. All the more strange when climateactions follows me directly after I made this tweet which, I think, goes directly against their apparent agenda.
So instead of simply ignoring follows which I do not wish to reciprocate, I’d like the option of responding with a “Why?” as a standard feature. I think it’s only fair.
