Photo test

I’m testing out a plugin for easy inclusion of Flickr photos. If you pay attention (I’m not expecting you to) you may notice aspects of this post change over time as I experiment with various settings. :-)

Simplicity

I’ve always liked visual simplicity. Sometimes less is more and a handful of simple elements can combine into a thing of beauty.

Here a simple geometric shape, offered by the corner of a hotel balcony, contrasted against a simple sky at sunset jumped out at me as a worthy subject. The bright light of the barely-hidden sun increases the contrast to further lessen the detail, leaving just the clean lines.

The coast

I decided it was time to post another photo and so looked through some of my older shots on Flickr.

This shot was taken in spring 2008 (October) at Paraparaumu Beach just north of Wellington.

How low can you go?

The title of this post used to be a feature in Aeroplane Monthly magazine many, many years ago. Then it referred to photographs of aircraft (taken before a certain date to discourage pilots conducting flights specifically for this purpose!)

Now I’m using it to caption this photo of a southern black backed gull, flying very low over the Pauatahanui arm of Porirua Harbour, near Paremata bridge.

Take a close look at the full sized photo to see just how low this bird got!

Lost love

It’s hard to believe it was 5 years ago today that our beloved Jinx passed from this world. Every so often an old box of clothes or other items surfaces with a tuft, sometimes even a coating of ginger fur.

This is one of the very last photos taken of him and one of my most favourite.

He was very ill and although we knew we made the right decision, it was one of the hardest days of my life. It still wells up, even now, remembering.

Wellywood

Yeah, I’m not a fan of the name. But I’m not so deeply disturbed by it as some people seem to be. I’d rather just show off Wellington than worry about some sign that three quarters of arriving airline passengers won’t see.

This photo looks a little dark here, so to get a proper look at it click on the photo to view it on Flickr and then press the ‘L’ key to see it on a black background.

This was taken tonight on my walk from the office to the railway station. Every so often I take my camera to work and see what opportunities appear. You can take a look at all of today’s shots on Flickr.

This is the first time I’ve tried a significant number of night shots, although as you can see there was still some light in the sky. I realised while processing these that I should have been setting negative exposure compensation which may have helped with the rather slow shutter speeds even at high ISO levels. Still, all of these shots are hand held!

“Flight”

This fellow was doing constant circuits of his tank at Auckland Zoo, flying around in the water like a fighter plane. It was fascinating to watch at the time – not to mention rather difficult to capture – but thinking about it now, I suspect he was bored with his surroundings.

Original New Zealand

Those who know me well will know I recently fell in love with the town of Rotorua. Not so much the town as the surrounding area, with its 16 lakes, lush bush and easily found seclusion.

This photo was taken in the Waimangu thermal valley, located approximately 20km southeast of Rotorua. While walking along the track, the sunlight caught the geothermal steam rather nicely as it swirled around the tree fern. I stopped and waited for the steam to look just so before snapping the shutter.
